Biodiversity Park Surat: A Green Gift to the City Inaugurated by the Prime Minister

A New Era of Development and Environment in Surat

Surat city witnessed a new chapter in development and environmental sustainability with the inauguration of Biodiversity Park Surat by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 27 via video conferencing. Along with this park, three other major public projects—a school, a drainage line, and a hospital management system—were also launched. This green space has been developed near the Kankara creek at a cost of ₹145 crore.

An International Standard Park Built with Global Collaboration

Biodiversity Park Surat has been designed as an international-level project in collaboration with the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, the European Union, and the ASD team. The park has been built by revitalizing the neglected and polluted areas on both sides of the city’s creeks, turning them into a lush green landscape.

Reviving the Vanishing Native Species of Surat

Approximately 600,000 trees have been planted across the 87.50-hectare area surrounding the creek. These include over 85 species of plants and trees that were once native to Surat but had disappeared—like Champak, Surya Kamal, Jinny Thuni, Kadam, Ardu, Hadasankal, and Aretha. These fragrant trees enhance the visitor experience by creating a soothing, nature-rich environment.

A Haven for Walking, Cycling, and Birdwatching

The park has been developed to promote a healthy lifestyle among residents. It features a 12-kilometer walking track and a 9-kilometer cycling path. Additionally, the park offers a birdwatching tower, a Chhath Puja lake, and a Discovery Centre for education and recreation.

Advanced Techniques for Pollution Reduction

Environmentally, Biodiversity Park Surat plays a vital role. It uses phytoremediation technology to reduce pollution in the creek. Rainwater harvesting, artificial islands, and modern odor control systems have also been implemented to make this park an eco-friendly urban oasis.

Education and Research Opportunities for Students

With Discovery and Interpretation Centres, the park provides information on local flora and fauna to citizens and researchers. Students will get opportunities to conduct biodiversity-related studies and environmental research, thereby promoting awareness and scientific curiosity.

Generating Employment through Green Infrastructure

Beyond environmental benefits, this ₹145 crore project is also creating employment in areas such as horticulture, housekeeping, and security services. It serves as a green space that contributes to both the physical and mental well-being of citizens.

Funding and Project Support

The project has been financially supported through the CITIIS program (₹80 crore) and SSCDL (₹65 crore). This ensures a high standard of infrastructure and sustainability in construction and maintenance.

An Environmental Response to Industrial Growth

As Surat continues to grow rapidly in industries ranging from textiles to petrochemicals, environmental concerns have become more pressing. The Biodiversity Park Surat is a sustainable and innovative solution aimed at rejuvenating the city’s ecological balance and making it greener and healthier.

Other Major Projects Inaugurated Alongside

In addition to the park, three other major public projects were also inaugurated:

A drainage pipeline from Vesu (ONGC) Sewage Pumping Station to Gaviyer STP (₹1.5 crore)

A primary school and Suman High School in Limbayat Zone (₹25 crore)

A new Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) worth ₹38 crore
